A Monumental Afternoon

Day 5- Monday, June 17 - Afternoon

We followed some crazy weather to Crazy Horse monument.  In this area of the country the rolling hills and lack of population allow you to see for miles.

We watched this storm in the distance as we drove, and avoided the bad weather, but were really surprised to come upon a large amount of hail leftover from the storm.

Crazy Horse was an unbelievable sight, and an amazing story in that it has been accomplished without state or federal funds.  Construction on the monument began in 1948 and continues today. The monument is 562 ft tall, and the chief's head is 87 ft tall!

From there we went to Mount Rushmore which was so impressive as a national monument to 4 presidents who recognized the importance of freedom, expansion, development and preservation of our country.  This monument was carved from 1927-1941' with faces that are 60 ft tall and eyes 11 ft wide!  It's amazing how these sculptors could create and implement their vision in a rock formation so many years ago.

Although we encountered some rain at Mount Rushmore, a rainbow greeted us as we left!  It truly was a monumental experience.
