Heritage Park Historical Village

Day 26 – Monday, July 8

What a difference a day makes!  Yesterday’s sun disappeared, and rain and chilly weather greeted us this morning.  After being out so late last night, the morning came early, with a breakfast at 8:30 at Heritage Park Historical Village.  It is Canada’s largest living history museum.  It is a huge complex, with an 1860’s fur trading fort, an 1880’s pre-railway settlement, a 1910 Prairie Railway village, and a Gasoline Alley Museum.

We rode the authentic steam train in cars that were of 1900 vintage. DSCN2194DSCN2204DSCN2191

We visited the post office, bakery (yummy raisin bread), the pool hall and the weekly newspaper print shop.

Jim’s dad and two brothers worked on a linotype machine like this one.

Jim did a 6-month apprenticeship as a printer, so had quite a conversation with the interpretive guides in the print shop about “the good ol days.”

In Gasoline Alley, we saw quite a bit of memorabilia…

.. along with a car from Auburn, Indiana!  This 1928 Auburn is thought to be the only one of its kind still around. (or at least that’s what the sign said.)  Signs of Indiana are following us around!DSCN2210

There was a whole section on agricultural equipment, but because it was raining, we elected to pass on it.

If the weather clears, we’ll hit Stampede Park this evening.  If not, we’re scheduled to go to another rodeo tomorrow.  All of this activity is wearing us out!
