40 Days and 40 Nights?….

Day 40 – Monday, July 22

Sunset is at 11:07, and sunrise is 5:04….there is lots of daylight, which makes you feel like you shouldn’t go to bed at night, and you should get up early in the mornings!  If you stay up to see the sunset, you can almost stay up a little longer and see a sunrise too! We put a blocker on the dome in the shower to keep out the light so we can get to sleep at night.  They call this the Land of the Midnight Sun, and now I know why!  There is hardly a nighttime!

We’ve been gone from home for 40 days now…hard to believe, and we’re not even in Alaska yet!  Whew…we finally get a break!  We will spend the next three days in Whitehorse, YT, the capital of the Yukon.  This is a metropolis--2/3 of the Yukon population lives here—and that’s only 26,000 people!  They have a Wal-Mart, and an entire downtown (translation:  shopping opportunities!)

I’ve been pretty good about shopping.   While at the FMCA convention I went to a seminar on organization and the presenter said something that stuck with me… She said when you want to buy something, always ask yourself two questions:  (1) Do I really need /want it?  (2) Where will I put it?   The “where will I put it” has really helped me avoid some unnecessary purchases!

We’ve seen a lot of intermittent rain the last few days.  Sometimes there are raindrops and it doesn’t look like there are any clouds.  Other times there are grey clouds, but no rain.  This morning as we were driving, it rained briefly, then the sun came out and left a beautiful rainbow laying in the valley of the mountain…I don’t know if you can see it in the picture, but it was so unusual and very pretty!! We continue to marvel at the countryside and gorgeous scenery as we travel theDSCN2491e Alaska Highway. It seems like most people are travelling in either a motorhome or on a motorcycle—we’ve seen so many different makes and models of campers and cycles.  We have also seen several groups of bicyclists, who are loaded down with bags and “stuff”, so I wonder if they are carrying tents and travelling the highway by bicycle?  That’s pretty ambitious.

The RV Parks seem to really enjoy our group (what rv park wouldn’t love to see 23 rv’s IMG_1214pull in for a night or two?)  We’re staying at the Pioneer RV Park who provided a “home cooked meal” for us tonight.  Then, we enjoyed some wonderful wine and good music with our new Texas friends.

No driving tomorrow, so we can stay up late!  It’s 10:40 and still full daylight!!
