Road to the Isles

July 15, 2015 – Day 30

We could have spentDSCN1423-001 more time in Gros Morne Park—there is so much to see, and a bunch of hiking trails that didn’t get walked on by our shoes! We took one final look at the Tablelands from a different viewpoint as we left the area, still awed by natures wonders.

We took a scenic drive to our next destination on a highway they call the “Road to the Isles”.  DSCN1425It travels north from TCH 1 (Transcanada Highway) to the northern coast of Newfoundland. We drove to the end of the road to Twillingate, and are staying at Peyton’s RV park.  There are actually two islands—north and south Twillingate that are connected by causeways.  It was a beautiful sunny day for the 5 hour drive, and the temperature rose to 80 degrees!

The scenery changeDSCN1428d as we headed across Newfoundland.  The pine trees became birch trees.  We saw fishermen in the streams, sometimes up to their waists.  The road followed the water, and had lots of twists and turns, and a whole lot of bumps and potholes! DSCN1429-001 There were signs warning of the potholes, along with other interesting signs along the way!

The RV park is at the end of the road, among trees, and we can look across the street and see the water.  DSCN1433We’ve been on the island so long, we’re beginning to talk like Newfoundlanders:  we’re going oat (out); look at the boots (boats) in the water.

We’re also learning a lot of Newfoundland music.  We went to a dinner theatre in the town of Twillingate, and were treated to a local performance of skits and music.  Accordians are a big part of the music here-- DSCN1434My sisters who are accorDSCN1435dian players would sure have enjoyed the show!  We saw another performance on the ugly stick!  I think Jim has a new project to make one of these when he gets home.  Start saving your bottle caps!

When we left the theatre, we walked outside and the fog had set in, and brought cool air with it.  You can hear the fog horns in the distance, kind of an eerie sound.  Another beautiful day….
