Geological Wonders

July 13, 2015 – Day 28
The rain finally quit, thank goodness, just in time for a boat tour to Bonne Bay, a deep fjord in the interior of Gros Morne park.  DSC_9248 We boarded the boat at Norris Point, a neat little town along the bay. DSC_9183
Gros Morne is known for its geological significance and didn’t disappoint as we saw some amazing things!  The pictures just don’t capture the kaleidoscope of colors or the awesomeness of the views.   We saw a huge impressive shale rock formation that hovered over the bay.DSC_9188  The captain described it as a shelf of shale that used to be horizontal, but shifted to vertical with the movemDSC_9197ent of the earth over millions of years.  You could actually see the layers that had been created over the years, and caves inset on the side.

Eagles nest here, and we saw two eagles flying around and eventually landing in trees near the rock formation—quite a sight!    DSC_9212 We also saw jellyfish, and a whale.

The most interesting geological wonder was the Tablelands.  It is a unique exposure of mantle rock that was raised from deep within the earth’s crust. The rocks are toxic to most plant life so it is barren. DSC_9219 It has a bronze-like color and stands out in stark contrast to the rest of the landscape.  It was almost majestic-looking as we saw it with clouds hanging over the flat top.  This is one of the few places that you can see mantle rock.  How amazing to think that it was sitting on the ocean floor at one time!   DSC_9251
We also travelled through a tickle, and also found out what it is!  A tickle is a narrow waterway between tDSC_9233wo islands or between an island and the mainland.  This tickle had a lighthouse at the end.
We were able to see a view of the towns from the water—so peaceful. DSC_9254DSC_9236

At the end of the trip, we DSC_9245were entertained by the crew, complete with an accordian-playing fisherman!
Tonight we went to dinner and a show, which featured a few of the musicians that played on the boat.  One of them played Wipe Out on an “ugly stick”—the best part of the whole performance!
……And for dessert we had a beautiful sunset! DSCN1379
