Trek to Thompson

Saturday, October 7, 2017
We woke up to rain this morning and 48 degree temps.  It drizzled the whole day, but wasn’t too cold, so it was bearable.
We are sDSC_9829 (2)till getting used to signs in kilometers rather than miles.  The speed limit is 100! (That’s kph…translates to about 60mph).  It makes the trip go faster when the sign says Thompson 210, and its really only 130 miles!  I guess its a mental thing. DSC_9826 (2)
We arrived in Thompson, Manitoba after a 6+ hour drive.  Thompson is called the “Hub of the North” because it is centrally located in northern Manitoba.  But, I think it’s named that because the main road ends here.  It is a city of about 15,000, and wDSC_9830 (2)as a stop along the fur trading route, but became well known in the 1950’s when a major ore body was discovered.   It’s a bustling city compared to what we’ve seen along the way. There’s a Walmart, and Tim Hortons (thank’s Tim for allowing me to post the blog!) There are a number of beautiful murals on the side of the buildings…the rain made it difficult to get many pictures.
We are staying at one of the few campgrounds in the area, McCreedy Campground.  The Campground is owned by the McCreedy’s and Colleen is the caretaker of both the campground AND the pets when we leave to go up to Churchill.  Our wagonmaster Terri was in charge of parking the rigs, and was smiling in spite of the rain.DSC_9832 (2)DSC_9834 (2)

The campground is situated right next to a river and our rigs are intermingled with hunters and fishermen in the park.  DSC_9835We spotted this “ice house” (used for icDSC_9836e fishing) in the site across from us.  The location is very handy for the hunters who pick up the float planes at the hangar next to the campground. We spent the afternoon packing and geDSC_9840tting ready for the trip to Churchill tomorrow.  Our checklist includes instructions for Spot who will be staying at the campground with Colleen.

P.S.  A big Happy Anniversary today to Tom & Margaret (brother and sister in law) celebrating a milestone 50 years!   Congratulations!
