The Halfway Point!

Day 55 – Tuesday, August 6

Alaska mapToday marks the halfway point of our 110 day Lundcruiser Adventure, and we are not yet halfway through our 48-day Alaska caravan!  Gosh, time goes by so quickly, and yet there is so much in store ahead!

Somebody from home asked exactly where we are, so I thought I’d include a map of Alaska to put things in perspective.  I’m trying to do something fancy with mapping our route, but I haven’t had much time to spend on it…

After nursing some sore muscles from our rafting adventure yesterday, we began our drive to Anchorage.  We tried to stop for breakfast at a small café in Cantwell, but the restaurant wouldn’t serve us…they had rented out the place to the highway crew for breakfast.  So, we said hello to the construction workers who were having a great smelling breakfast, and we ended up eating granola bars and Connie-McMuffins on the road!

The road to AnJB2_7434chorage was not too bad, although we encountered some good-sized wind and frost heaves again.  We stopped several times for different views of Mt. McKinley.  We got some good pictures of the South Peak.  And, Spot wondered why we were spending so much time takJB2_7443ing pictures!

On the way to Anchorage, we passed through Wassilla .  We wanted a picture by the “Welcome to Wassilla” sign, but somebody took it down!  We did spot the Mug Shot Saloon, aDSCN2948nd the Chamber of commerce, DSCN2949

and then stopped at the Walmart, where we hoped to see Sarah Palin, but since we didn’t find her in the store, Jim washed the motorhome in the Walmart parking DSCN2955lot!

Also, check out these racing snowmobiles we saw in the parking lot!

We arrived at the Golden Nugget RV Park in Anchorage, and it was very exciting because we had a box of mail and magazines waiting for us (thank you jen);  I was also greeted with a surprise box from my sister (thanks so much Carol!)

Anchorage is a huge city compared to the places we’ve been the past two weeks.  It is the largest city (population-wise) in Alaska, and half of Alaska’s residents live here.  (Maybe that explains the great wi-fi here—hooray!)
