Return to Whitehorse

Day 71 – Thursday, August 22

DSCN3447We woke up to a beautiful sunrise which was a pleasant change from the rainy weather we’ve seen for the past week or so.  We didn’t see the Northern Lights last night, but will continue to watch for them as the daylight is decreasing about 6-7 minutes per day.

Thank goodness I was able to post yesterday’s blog at breakfast, since the restaurant had wifi!

The drive today was much better than yesterday…smoother roads with only occasional frost heaves.   The sDSCN3451unny skies also made all the difference in the world!  The road followed Kluane Lake for many miles, with the snow covered mountains providing a scenic backdrop.

We arrived at Whitehorse, the capital of the Yukon, a one night stopover before we hit Skagway. We were here about 30 days ago…it’s hard to believe it’s been that long.  At least we know our way around…it’s kind of nice to know where things are!  We are staying again at Pioneer RV Park which is supposed to have wifi, but the signal isn’t holding up very well.

We made our mandatory stop at Walmart to reload supplies.  We also took on fuel ($5.30 per gallon ugh!)  We hit the bank to exchange some US currency for Canadian, since after we leave Skagway, we will be in Canada for a few weeks before we hit the US again.  We had a great halibut lunch at the Klondike Rib and Salmon restaurant, and stopped to wash the truck on the way back to the campground so that we could see out of the windows which were still dirty from the drive to Destruction Bay!

The caravan days are quickly passing—there are only 10 days left until the final farewell for the group.  We’ve made some really good friends over the past 30 days, and as we talked at breakfast, we agreed we will definitely see some of them again.

Since we left home on June 13, we have travelled 6,150 miles in the motorhome, and 1,990 miles in the truck!  We can’t even count the number of adventures we’ve experienced and memories we’ve created on this trip of a lifetime.
