Spit Happens!

Day 60 – Sunday, August 11
Life on the Spit is good, but soggy!  After our campfire last night, we stayed up until midnight to see if we could see the Perseid meteor shower.  Unfortunately it wasn’t dark enough to see stars.  I got up about 3am to try again, but no stars were out…not sure if it was not dark enough or that clouds rolled in.  This morning it was raining , but still a beautiful view outside, as we watched paddleboarders move across the bay in the mist. (a little crazy tho…)  It rained all day.
I found out a little more about the Homer Spit:  It is the 2nd longest “spit” in the world.  It is thought to be the remains of an ancient glacial moraine.  They say that this is one of the few places in the world where several glaciers and active volcanoes can be viewed at the same time.  After the 1964 earthquake, the Spit sank 4-6 feet!
Homer has a natural, protected deep-water harbor for cargo and theDSCN3108 bay provides safe anchorage during stormy weather.  It is also considered the halibut fishing capital of the world..that’s why we’ve scheduled a halibut fishing trip on Monday!  (we’re cleaning out the freezer…just in case…)  Homer is the home port for the Time Bandit (from the tv show “The Deadliest Catch”! )  I didn’t see the boat in the harbor, but will check again tomorrow.

There are tsunami warning signs along the road (they look similar to hurricane evacuation route signs in Florida), and tsunami siren tests are done weekly—makes sense, but kind of strange to see these signs.  After all the rain today, I wonder if there will be a flood warning??   don’t think it ever stopped raining today, and the temperature only got up to 58.  It is supposed to clear up and warm up tomorrow (thank goodness!)
I visited theDSCN3106 Islands and Oceans Center today…a natural history and culture museum.  There was an interesting movie on the marine life studies  performed around the Spit and in the bay.  They also had an impressive display of birds—the Seabird Theatre, and it made you feel like the birds were flying around you.  It was complete with bird calls and with bird droppings on the floor and surrounding rocks! Nothing like reality?
I also visited the Seafarer’s Memorial, right along the water.  There were fDSCN3111resh flowers in the hand of the statue.  Not sure if fresh flowers are always there…or if there was a special significance.  I did find the commemorative bricks from the Time Bandit in the walkway surrounding the monument.          DSCN3110
The rain dampened our activities today, but we were able to catch up on bills, laundry, cleaning, etc.  We will get a good night’s sleep because it’s an early morning tomorrow for our fishing trip…the boat leaves port at 6:30 am!
