Cliffs of Moher and More

 Friday September 1, 2023

We started off with a foggy misty morning, but the locals said it was a sign that the sun soon would be out soon... they were right!

We made our way down to Galway for a quick "comfort" stop (that means a quick shopping stroll, a cup of coffee and a stop at facilities.  We found the Galway Girl, and Jim stopped at McDonalds for a cup of coffee--they don't take American charge cards--isn't that weird?

We found facilities but it required a fee (haven't seen that in awhile!) And, yes, they take charge cards!

There are still a lot of Notre Dame fans around, and I love these special Ireland shirts in the window!

We headed around the Galway Bay on very narrow roads and came upon another bus--YIKES!! (He backed up so we made it through.) These bus drivers are brave souls!

There were some lonely sailboats waiting for the tide to come in.
We could see across the bay to the Aran islands.  There was a large cruise ship anchored in the bay.

On the way, we went up corkscrew hill, a series of winding curves up the mountain.  Once at the top, it was a picturesque view of the amphitheater carved out during the ice age.  You could see all the way to the sea.
We finally made it to the Cliffs of Mohr, and were treated to another brilliant rainbow!

The cliffs were formed between 300-326 million years ago (but who's counting?)  They extend for miles along the coastline, soaring up to 700 ft above the sea, with the waves crashing in at the bottom.

What a spectacular sight!
Just outside the Cliffs sits Bridgid's well, a site where people believed the waters of the well had healing powers.  There are still pilgrimages to the site today.
This tour is keeping us very busy... we barely had time to check in the hotel before we were whisked off to a medieval dinner in Knappouge Castle a towerhouse from 1467 in Limerick
We were treated to mead wine (a honey wine) and some great Irish music and dance.
Our tour has gone by quickly... only 5 more days to go. We have been kept very busy, and have seen a lot and there's more to come.
I hardly have time to post the blog, in fact I'm typing on the bus which I just discovered has wifi (slow, but I'm not complaining!)  Wifi on a bus is a first for me!
