Westward Ho!

Friday, July 22, 2022

We departed this morning for our 5-week westward adventure!  We are leaving HOT weather, and it may get hotter as we head west, but we're sure to cool down with all the fun in store.  It will take 3 days to get there, driving about 500 miles per day.  Normally we travel around 65 mph in the motorhome—no need to push it.

Packing was a challenge, not only being gone so long, but also figuring out what to wear for the wedding and western cocktail night.   Because we are driving, we are carrying suit and dress bags for 4 families, along with cowboy hats and boots!  Just couldn't bear the thought of leaving the lighted cowboy hats at home!

We waved as we passed the exit for the Iowa Speedway. The IndyCar race is Sunday, and we considered adding it to our itinerary, but timing didn't work.

As we passed, we could see a lot of cars and it looked like a decent crowd.  We know a couple of nephews are there to enjoy the weekend racing activities.  Nephew AJ is the one in the middle in case you don't recognize him!

Our first fuel stop found diesl for $5.58/gallon. (oh my!)   With our gas card, it discounts to $5.15.  We did a partial fill, knowing gas is under $5.00 further west.  We agreed not to worry about fuel prices so we can enjoy the trip.  There will NOT be a calculation of fuel cost at the end of the trip!  (We eventually did find it cheaper in Iowa.)

We stopped for the night at the West Des Moines KOA, ready to head further west tomorrow.
